Starting New Lawn Traditions

Traditional lawns can be beautiful, but enjoying your yard starts with spaces that fit your life and who you are. A lawn as unique as you and your family calls for new traditions that embrace the things most important to you.

With Pennington Smart Seed Clover + Grass Mix, you can create a lawn that celebrates nature and biodiversity — and cut down on water and fertilizer usage as well as maintenance time.

This premium lawn alternative combines self-fertilizing Durana white clover with a mix of Pennington Smart Seed grasses designed to take hold and establish quickly, even on slopes and hills.

Once established, the water-conserving Smart Seed grasses in your new lawn use up to 30% less water than ordinary grass seed. That's a substantial savings for you and the environment, year after year, for the life of your lawn.

To turn your traditional lawn into a soft, sustainable alternative lawn doesn't mean you have to start from scratch. Part of the beauty of Pennington Smart Seed Clover + Grass Mix is that you can start with whatever you have. Transform your lawn gradually, or take the fast track. The decision is entirely yours.

Native plants and wildflowers go hand in hand with natural clover lawns.

Creating a Lawn That Fits Your Life

When selecting areas to transform into an eco-conscious environment, there's room for new traditions here, too. You can do your whole lawn or pick and choose areas of your space to complement features that make your yard uniquely yours.

Our pollinator-friendly Pennington Smart Seed Clover + Grass Mix makes a beautiful complement to gardens of native plants or backyard wildflower meadows that attract butterflies and wild birds.

The best time to seed your lawn is spring or early fall when average daily temperatures are between 60° to 80° Fahrenheit. That's the time and the temps when the Durana clover and Smart Seed grasses in Pennington Smart Seed Clover + Grass Mix germinate and establish best. That gives your new natural lawn time to settle in before the heat of summer hits.

Follow the instructions on the product label for the proper rates for your plans. Whether you clear away your old lawn and start with bare soil or choose to overseed your existing lawn, your transformation from traditional to original starts with three easy steps:

  1. Prepare: Remove debris and rake the area to ensure a firm seed bed. This preps the soil to receive the seed and provides good contact.
  2. Apply: Spread Pennington Smart Seed Clover + Grass Mix evenly over the area using a drop, rotary or hand-held spreader. (You'll find settings for popular spreaders on the label.) Gently rake to work the seed into the soil.
  3. Water: Keep the soil moist by watering daily as needed until grasses sprout and reach about 2 inches tall.

As your lawn continues to grow and establish, you'll enjoy a softer, taller, more natural-looking lawn dotted with small white Durana clover flower heads.

Low-maintenance alternative lawns translate to more leisure time.

Caring for Your Eco-Smart Lawn

Once your Pennington Smart Seed Clover + Grass Mix reaches 2 inches tall, we suggest you mow it. This initial mowing helps the grasses and clover to get better established as more uniform light reaches the plants and the soil. After that initial trim, how natural you go and how often you mow is up to you.

An occasional mowing helps keep your new drought-tolerant lawn looking and performing its best. But to keep your clover thick and healthy, avoid removing more than one-third of the plant height in any single mowing.

During hot summer months, if you do mow, increase your mowing height. Even though your Smart Seed and clover lawn tolerates drought, higher mowing heights help reduce stress on your lawn during hot, dry times.

The Durana clover in Pennington Smart Seed Clover + Grass Mix fixes nitrogen in the soil to naturally fertilize itself. But once your new lawn gets established, you may want to treat the grasses to an annual feeding with Pennington Full Season Lawn Food 32-0-5 Fertilizer. Designed for just one application per season, this fertilizer contains natural beneficial microorganisms that revitalize your soil and help your new clover lawn thrive.

One final and very important point to remember: Avoid all types of herbicides on areas seeded with Pennington Smart Seed Clover + Grass Mix, including weed-and-feed fertilizer products. Clover is a broadleaf plant, not a grass. Broadleaf weed killers will kill your clover along with the broadleaf weeds in your lawn.

By transforming your grass into a luscious, natural, sustainable lawn, you can make your lawn your own and create new traditions that focus on what matters most. So, go ahead; kick your shoes off. Relax and enjoy what you see and feel. Have a question? We'd love to hear it. We're Pennington. We're here to help make your lawn dreams come true.
