XTRAN is Pennington's expert system, developed specifically for symbolic manipulation of computer languages, including assembler through fourth generation programming languages, markup languages, database languages, scripting languages, and special-purpose languages.  Through manipulation of its internal representation of these languages, XTRAN provides analysis, improvement, translation, re-engineering, standardization, and code generation.  XTRAN also provides powerful text processing capabilities.

XTRAN can provide analysis, translation, and re-engineering of many VMS languages:

• VAX MACRO (assembler):  Analysis, translation to C
• VMS Pascal:  Analysis, re-engineering, translation to C/C++
• VMS PL/I:  Analysis, re-engineering, translation to C/C++
• VMS Fortran:  Analysis, re-engineering, translation to C/C++

In addition, XTRAN's re-engineering capabilities can automate the process of changing the VMS dependencies in your code to accommodate Unix, Windows, or any other target platform.
